In Salado, right off the creek on Royal street, there’s an old silver building glistening in the sun, that in a former life has been, among a few things, a granary, a theatre and now a brewery. Barrow Brewing Co, Bell County’s first microbrewery.
Warm and welcoming, when you walk in through one of the two red doors or the giant windowed garage styled door, rows of German styled festival tables hearken you back to a youthful Oktoberfest in a small Texas town, where polka fills the air and old men spin around the dance floor with young ladies laughing and clapping along in that iconic “dun dun dun dun” rhythm. The tables, by design and implementation, almost demand that you throw down your walls and reach across the chasm of conversation to your new table mates, sharing a simple and ice breaking “Hello” with someone new. The German festival tables are a little smaller and a little longer than a standard sized table, meaning, that when you sit down with a stranger, with your pint of Ski boat and a scrabble board utter that simple phrase, you stand up a few pints later with a new friend.
Owners KD and her husband Graydon have worked hard to make Barrow not only a great place to meet new friends but also a place you can bring your grandparents, dogs, and even kids! With a family friendly atmosphere, board games for everyone to play, live music, food trucks, yoga, movies, cycling and even a lecture series, it’s a fantastic place to come and relax.
Owning a photography studio in Salado right down the street, we often stop in with the kids for some fellowship, a quick pint and a few rounds of Jenga with the kids after spending the day shooting photos.
With names and recipes inspired by local history, brews like Evil Catfish, inspired by a Salado legend, is hoppy and intense, while the Ski Boat Ale (my favorite) is light, refreshing and crisp, the kind you drink while lounging in the Texas heat in a hammock or on the water begging for winter to come sooner than later.
With a large selection of rotating brews to choose from, family (and pet) friendly atmosphere, Barrow is one of my favorite places to wind down, meet new people, play a few games, listen to some live music and just have a great time. Visit them on Royal St in Salado, and check our Centexfun.com calendar for some of their upcoming events!
