On a recent weekday afternoon in between meetings I and my companions decided to stop for lunch at one of the few Greek restaurants in central Texas. Acropolis Greek Cuisine in Harker Heights isn’t hard to find. Located on the eastbound frontage road between Indian Trail and Knight’s Way, Acropolis is tucked into what might be considered a little foodie strip center. Other offerings in the space include a Venezuelan restaurant, a sports bar & grill, and Lily’s Cakes, a winner on the popular TV show “Cake Wars”. But exploration of those spots will be in the near future. For right now we’re just talking greek to you.
The menu has plenty of traditional greek fare and everything is made fresh daily according to the owners. I started with Tzatziki & pita as an appetizer while the others had Tabbouleh salad and a traditional Greek Salad. My main entree was a simple Gyro while the others had a Mediterranean Wrap with Gyro meat and a Pastitisio (greek lasagna). After taste testing each others choices, the table agreed that this was true greek cuisine.
Since it was lunchtime the bigger meals would have to wait until my next visit, but I’m looking forward to it. The Garides Ouzo looks interesting with its shrimp in a creamy ouzo sauce over pasta. Maybe the Chicken Souvlaki, a favorite greek dish of mine, will be on my next order. Either way, from the appetizers to the desserts and everything in between, there’s plenty of authentic greek choices at Acropolis Greek Cuisine.
