Temple’s Parks and Recreation put on the annual Polar Bear Plunge at Lions Junction in Temple on Saturday. The weather wasn’t as chilly as years past but the water was cold enough to keep everyone honest. The weather, combined with the Saturday dive time, created a crowd of those willing to dip their toes in the water and many who just wanted to watch the crazy people jump.
Last year’s belly-flop champion, CenTexFun’s own Steve Peters, kicked off the belly-flop competition by stripping his Santa suit, stepping to the end of the board, and displayed surprisingly good form to deliver a splash that set the bar. Jason Deckman twirled his shirt and face-planted into the icy-cold water. They were followed by Waco’s Tim Murphy who led with his face but pulled off a significant splash enough to tie for the lead. Steve and Tim had a cannonball-off where Steve edged Tim for the coveted victory.
After that, the pool was opened up for those wanting to test their courage. They were able to jump off the side of the pool or use the diving board for maximum air and a daunting swim to the side once the water shocked their system. In all, about fifty people tested the waters. Several photographers were on hand to capture the event along with the local newspapers.
